Intentional living as a woman in her 40s can be incredibly rewarding and empowering.
Living intentionally doesn’t have to be boring. It doesn’t need to be complicated and you surely don’t have to take any drastic measures in the way you shift your focus.
It’s actually quite simple, speaking from experience. Simply CHOOSE to be intentional in the smallest of tasks.
Just one small change can make a big difference and snowball into many changes.
You may just find yourself feeling empowered, brave and happy as you make choices that support the lifestyle you want for yourself.
Choosing To Be Intentional Takes Practice
Start out by being mindful of daily decisions that just come up, naturally and organically.
For instance, perhaps it’s laundry day and you are sitting on the floor surrounded by towels. Towels for days.
You start counting the number of towels you have and find yourself not wanting to fold another single towel.
How about you intentionally give yourself the gift of having less to wash and fold by donating, gifting or tossing any you no longer want or need?
We can create a lifestyle that is simpler yet full of joy. We just have to decide what’s important and choose to make those things a priority.
7 Ways To Get Started Living A More Intentional Life In Your 40s
Something to keep in mind as you navigate this list; Living Intentionally can help us to prioritize our time and energy.
It can also create more meaningful connections with ourselves and the people we actually want to give our time and energy to.

- Create a personal mission statement; A declaration of your core beliefs and what you want to achieve in life. Writing one can help you stay focused on what matters most to you.
- Practice mindfulness; The practice of being present in the moment and being aware of your thoughts and feelings without judgment. It can help you reduce stress and increase your ability to focus on what’s important.
- Set goals; Give yourself a direction to your life. Make sure your goals are SMART (specific, measurable, attainable, relevant, and time-bound) to make them achievable.
- Declutter your life; Clearing out your physical and mental space can help you focus on what truly matters. Get rid of things that no longer serve you and simplify your life.
- Prioritize relationships; Spending quality time with people who matter to you is one of the best intentional living practices! Cultivate meaningful relationships and let go of toxic ones.
- Practice self-care; Take care of yourself physically, emotionally, and mentally. Make more time for the activities that nourish your soul and make you feel really damn good.
- Embrace new experiences; Try new things and step outside your comfort zone. Explore new places, learn new skills, and challenge yourself to grow! You deserve to do this.
How To Be Intentional In Every Day Tasks
Being intentional in your every day tasks, no matter how big or small, grand or seemingly insignificant can be a great way to make sure that you are living your life to the fullest.
It can also help you stay organized and on top of your responsibilities as you make this mindset shift.
Here are 8 tips that have helped me (and can possibly help you, too) to stay intentional daily.
- Set goals for ONLY the day ahead. Make a list if you love lists like me. This helped a TON!
- Set short-term goals for the WEEK ahead. What’s one bigger task you’d like to accomplish?
- Set longish-term goals for the MONTH ahead. What’s something kinda big you’ve been putting off that would truly help you practice living intentionally? Closet clean-out?
- Make a plan for ALL your goals. Once you’ve written them down, jot down how you’re going to take action and how you’ll celebrate the accomplishments!
- Take breaks. Girl. Overwhelm is REAL. Take as many breaks as you need, but try to remember to come back and finish what you started. Don’t give up.
- Prioritize the daily goals list. Before you dive in, try to knock some of the easier tasks off the list first. You’ll feel empowered to keep going!
- Stay organized. It’s easy for me to get side-tracked sometimes, so in order to truly practice living intentionally, I have to stay organized with realistic goals (and lists), small challenges to hold myself accountable (this is especially true for exercising / gym time) and set myself up for success with actual tools I made need to accomplish the weekly goals, especially.
- Celebrate all the successes. Every single one of them, big or small. Cross something off one of your lists? Stop and dance it out! I mean it. Just do it.
By following these, you can be more intentional in your daily tasks which will build up over time to slowly shift and change your life! Nothing changes overnight.
You have to put the time and energy into what it is you want for yourself.

Why Practicing Being Intentional with Smaller, Every day, week and month tasks?
Honestly, practice makes perfect! Truly.
Setting daily, weekly, monthly, short-term and long-term goals can be incredibly beneficial for anyone who is wanting to literally change their life.
Having something to strive for (and actually accomplish) can help you stay focused and intentional. Plus it feels SO good when you’re successful.
Having a plan for how you will accomplish your goals is vital to success, my friend! It can help you stay on track and make sure you are truly being intentional with and about the actions you take, daily.
Taking time for yourself to relax and recharge (aka take a break!) can help you stay focused when it comes to actionable tasks on your goals lists.
Don’t let overwhelm creep on in there and throw you off track. It’s easy to do, sometimes. Take breaks as needed, then jump back in!
Prioritizing your tasks can help you stay organized and intentional with your actions. Are you seeing the pattern here? Start with the small things, cross ’em off and dance to celebrate!
Then move onto the larger tasks, like cleaning out that overstuffed closet that’s been giving you anxiety for the past year.
Something that helps me stay intentional throughout my day is to keep my environment as tidy and organized as possible.
This isn’t the easiest thing in the world to do with four kiddos, but I still TRY. It just feels better to have a warm, cozy home that allows me to focus on my daily tasks.
Don’t forget to celebrate your successes, no matter how big or small! You may feel a bit silly dancing it out at first, but I bet once you do it a few times you’l feel the joy and want to keep going!
It’s motivating and will keep you pushing forward to create the life you want for yourself.
Final Thoughts
Thank you for visiting me today!
I love writing about living intentionally, because it’s where I’m at in my life right now, as a woman in her 40s. I feel like my world has expanded SO much more now that my youngest is 6.
I love my four babies more than the air I breathe and they suck the life out of me sometimes. Ha!
Now that all four littles are working on being more independent, I’ve found a little more time to give to myself. It hasn’t been easy, but I’m finding being more intentional in every way possible, is breathing new life into my soul. I’m hooked.
